May 25: Memorial Day/ No School
June 3: Last Day of Third Grade!

Reminder: 3rd Grade Portfolio Showcase on May 13th from 1:30-4 pm
Please ensure your child will be available and at our third grade portfolio presentations in the afternoon of Wednesday, May 13th. We will give your specific half hour time slot this week. It is a momentous occasion for students, and they are already very excited about it!

Portfolio Panel Sign-ups
Third grade is a showcase portfolio year, and we will need panelists! Unfortunately, third grade parents cannot be on the third grade panels. However, you can sign up to be on the sixth grade panels. Please consider signing up! This is an experience that is unique to REMS and is a wonderful growth opportunity for our students. Particularly for sixth graders, as it is their last year at Renaissance, it is a very meaningful ritual. Sign up to be on a 6th grade portfolio panel here.

Fieldwork at Bent's Fort

Our day at Bent's Fort was a HUGE SUCCESS!
We had a fantastic day. The students did a fabulous job of being good listeners, recording notes, and collecting new learning. Student's got to hear the perspective of a trader, trapper/ mountain man, craftsman, and Mexican worker.
At the end of a full day of gathering information, students were able to begin the process of charting their learning.

Next week, I look forward to debriefing this experience and having them share with each other their learning.

A huge thank you to:
~Parents: for rearranging your schedules and your punctuality with the drop off/pick-up times.
~Chaperones: for volunteering your time! I hope you enjoyed the day.
~Students: for working hard to listen and learn at Bent's Fort.
Here is an overview of our day. Use the questions for conversations with your child to share more about our day.

What was our purpose of going to Bent's Fort?

Tell me about Bent's Fort. What was it made of? What did you notice about the building and the rooms inside?

Tell me about the Trader. What kinds of items were traded? Where did the items come from?

What was it like to be an apprentice for a craftsman? What was his job like?

What was it like to be an apprentice for a carpenter? What kinds of things did he do in his job?

Tell me about the hunters. What  kinds of food did they hunt?

Why were there peacocks at Bent's Fort?

What was it like to be a Mexican worker? What kind of work did they do?

Did you make any adobe bricks?

Why was the Arkansas River significant?

During the debrief, what learning did you share? What deepened your thinking about the people and the perspectives of this time?

Wow! Trang did it again! How lucky we are to have a master photographer join us during our learning experiences. She did a beautiful job capturing her group of learners, in addition to some stunning picturesque shots of Bent's Fort. Check them out: http://1drv.ms/1FG6tGh
