Voyages and Chaperone Philosophy

This year, there are some changes to how we will be pairing chaperones with patrols in voyages. Please read the following letter to understand our decision and the philosophy behind it.

I will be making chaperone decisions by Friday. Please update the sign-up genius as needed.

The third grade voyage is August 19-21st.
Are you interested in chaperoning?

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. :)

Thanks!

Our Philosophy on Chaperoning

Each year we get closer to achieving the goals of our Adventure Education program and one of those goals is to be able to facilitate the voyages without the support of parent chaperones. Students challenge themselves further emotionally, physically, and mentally away from the presence of their parents. We recognize it is confusing for parents because we use parents for chaperones on some voyages and not others.

In keeping in line with our Adventure Education goals to support the students in stepping beyond his/her comfort zones, we are asking all chaperones to volunteer with a patrol that does not include their son/daughter. We understand this changes the parent’s  perspective and doesn’t allow a lot of interaction with their child, however we feel this facilitates independence and leadership skills for the students in a positive way. We can assure you that the parent’s presence on the trip will be felt by the child, even if you are not in the same patrol. Please know we do not want to discourage you from joining the voyage team; it will be a memorable experience for all participants involved. Contact your child’s teacher, as soon as possible,  if you are interested in volunteering in this capacity.
